Online film festivals are film festivals that are held entirely online. Usually, films are shown for a certain amount of time, and viewers can vote on the films they have watched.

Top Shorts and The Monthly Film Festival are the world's leading online film festivals, ranked in Top 10 Best and Most Reviewed Festivals, out of over 5000 of the world's best film festivals and among the first from the online film festivals.

Another world-renowned online film festival is the Los Angeles Film Awards, that attracts both mainstream and indie films every month.

Actors Awards is a monthly competition, designed specifically for actors worldwide. This Los Angeles based competition is dedicated to promoting actors in a wide range of genres, and awards actors in independent films, as well as famous actors, such as Dee Wallace and Ali Bastian.

IndieBOOM! is a new festival for short-form work that streams online and on the Brooklyn On Demand Roku channel. It also features a screenplay competition. In addition to traditional festival categories like comedy, drama and documentary, IndieBOOM! has added commercials, fan films, dance, lip sync and series. Category winners are chosen by audience views with the most-viewed selection receiving a cash prize of $500. All category winners also receive year-long distribution on Brooklyn On Demand.

The first online film festival pioneered in the 1990's by the Webdance Film Festival.

The rapid pace of technological advancement had a huge effect on film festivals moving them into the online space. Many new filmmakers are starting to produce and edit their films on computers rather than on celluloid. And many film lovers are looking to the Internet for the latest independent releases. Film festivals continue to be an important outlet for filmmakers who want to showcase their works and seek audiences and investors. Many of the major film festivals understand that an online component is going to become an important part of future festivals--and future films in general. Thus the web film festival was born.
